Holiday Costa Brava

Holiday on the Costa Brava

The Catalan dream...

Anyone who thinks that the Costa Brava is only for young partygoers is wrong. It is of course absolutely gorgeous! Enjoy sun, sea and sand (and a party for those who want to), but this rugged coast has much, much more to offer.

Chunky rocks

Costa Brava means 'rugged coast' and there are several places where you are surrounded by clear blue seas near the foothills of the Pyrenees. Take a dip in the sea, where you'll be surprised by the rocky seabed, colourful coral reefs and shipwrecks. The most beautiful place? The islands of Medes, in l'Estartit, is known for its amazing underwater world but boating, surfing or kayaking is 'no problema' on this costa.

Trips and gardens

In the resort of Roses, located in the Bay of Roses, there’s a long path to walk down along the coast, special olive routes and tours along menhirs (large stones) and dolmens (megalithic tombs) to see. Why not grab some culture? Many more can be found naturally in Blanes. This seaside town has one of Spain's most beautiful botanical gardens. With all the tropical plants and flower species you’ll have a floral treat!

TO DO

Well worth a visit

In the small town of Besalu the Río Fluvià enchants with its medieval townscape and historical landmarks. The best way to discover Besalu on a family holiday is on foot, because that way you also get into the narrowest alleys. And don't miss the monastery church of Sant Pere de Besalu, the church of Sant Vicenç and the Church Hospital Sant Julià from the inside.

EVENTS

Fiestas del Carmen

In fishing villages like Lloret de Mar, Empuriabrava or Palamos the "Fiestas del Carmen" place every year in July. In sumptuous processions is a statue of Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen brought to the Mediterranean. It is vigorously celebrated and the traditional Catalan folk dance "Sardanas" are demonstrated by the locals.

SHOPPING

Viva Barcelona!

On family holiday on the Costa Brava there is only one place for a major shopping trip: Barcelona. While driving time from Blanes is around 1.5 hours, the upscale boutiques of "Passeig de Gràcia" and "Carrer de Pelayo" are always worth it. Even if you only go window shopping, it's a good chance to explore some of the sights of Barcelona.

Cuisine

Seafood Galore

On the Costa Brava lots of fish and seafood is eaten. A typical specialty is "Esqueixada", a kind of salad with cod and tomato. For dessert, the sweet "Crema Catalana", the Spanish version of the "crème brulée" beckons.
