The fort lies on a rock that protrudes and is a striking point on Corfu. Probably the name Corfu is derived from the Greek word koryfes which means 'top'. The fort had a defense function and was even used by the Greek army until the late 1970s. After the restoration it is open to the public. From the fort you have a beautiful view and besides the fort you can also visit a small Byzantine museum and the garrison church.
Always wanted to throw plates? It is of course cliché but sometimes nice to live out on the village square between the hospitable Greeks. So shake off your sobriety and throw yourself passionately on the traditional dance steps.
What is being cooked by those Greek chefs? Fresh simple ingredients and herbs brought together in famous dishes like mousaka, tzatziki and spanakopita. And all served with Greek flair.
Shopping day? Go to Corfu Town. In Kerkyra you will find trendy popular clothing brands and beautiful bags. And for holiday gifts you will certainly succeed in one of the cozy souvenir shops. A beautiful tree-lined shopping street is the Alexandrastraat, which continues until the San Rocco square near the sea.
On one of the most beautiful places in Corfu is the tiny white monastery Vlacherna. From a higher point in Kanoni, once the capital of Corfu, you can take a great picture. Walk to the island for a visit, it is no longer used as a monastery, now there is a chapel and a souvenir shop.
