Holiday in Provence

Vast expanses of purple ...

The Mont Ventoux, the endless fields of lavender and sunflowers, marshes and beautiful cities such as Marseille will make you realise why Provence is so beloved.

Coasts and colour

In the nineteenth century, the French nobility and English fought for domination of this beautiful area called Provence. ‘Ocher’ cliffs, green vineyards and fields of purple lavander dominate the magnificent landscape. Along the coast you will find fjords, bays and sandy beaches. If you like active holidays, mountain biking, hiking and scuba diving are all ways to discover this beautiful region.

Port city of Marseille

Marseille, after Paris, is the largest city in France and the largest commercial port. Walking along the streets and through the charming square of the Basilica you reach ‘Notre-Dame de la Garde’, an imposing limestone church situated at the highest point of the city. Worth a visit is the wonderful ‘Palais Longchamp’. The left wing of the building houses the Museum of Fine Arts, while the right wing houses the Museum of Natural History. Cours Mirabeau is definitely the place to see and the symbol of this town is nothing but a tree-lined street surrounded by charming and picturesque houses. The avenue is home to spectacular fountains, such as the Fountain of the Four Dolphins.

TO DO

Excursion to Combe de Curnier

‘Mont Ventoux’ is known as a stage of the Tour de France and is very popular with walkers. In fact, here you will find several trails for beginners and professionals. Arrange a visit to ‘la Combe de Curnier’: a deep and narrow cavity.

TO TASTE

Different specialties

In Provence, there is no end to the long line of delicious local produce. In addition to olives, lavender and provencal herbs, the region is also famous for Bouillabaisse (fish soup), salad nicoise, honey and sardines. It is also one of the largest producers of rosé wine in the world.

SHOPPING

Streets full of fashion

If you are not far from the French Riviera, we recommend the excellent shops in the seaside resorts such as Nice, St Tropez and Cannes. Cannes is especially fun: here you are spoilt for choice on the ‘Boulevard de la Croisette’, a promenade filled with shops, hotels and palaces, such as the beautiful Festival Palace of Congress.

TO SEE

The Castle of Les Baux

A quiet village, in typical Provencal style, is ‘Les Baux-de-Provence’. This village is known for its two Michelin star restaurant: ‘The Oustau de Baumanière’. Definitely worth a visit is the Castle of ‘Les Baux’, built on top of a limestone rock where the view is spectacular.
